Santo Scenarium

Santo Scenarium

The Santo Scenarium Bar and Restaurant, works in the two-storey mansion, fully restored, at Rua do Lavradio, 36.

In the past, the restored mansion was the residence of the renowed actor João Caetano (1808-1863), and, in the 19th century, a police station operated there. In 1884, the building “witnessed” the murder of the abolitionist journalist Apulcro de Castro, editor of “Corsário”, a newspaper that criticized the empire. According to Euclídes da Cunha, Apulcro was beaten and stabbed in the back by a military group who were not intimidated by the fact that they were a few meters from the police station. As a reminder of that time, the house kept part of the cell bars in its corridor that leads to goes way back.

Today, the place is decorated with a beautiful collection of sacred art that draws attention with its oratories and other relics, such as the 2.5-meter wooden angel hanging from the ceiling – a replica of Aleijadinho’s work. The menu is inspired by the wonderful contemporary cuisine, pleasing the taste of the regulars, serving more than 250 people for daily lunch.
